Comment préparer un biberon, ou l’art de contenter le ventre de votre bébé - Élhée

How to prepare a bottle, or the art of satisfying your baby's tummy

Infant formula, or powdered milk, and water. That's all there is to it, or rather, the bottle is ready. "How do I prepare a bottle?" is one of the most frequent questions from expectant parents. Fear of measuring incorrectly, using unsuitable water, upsetting their baby's tummy, or that they'll still be hungry … These are concerns that, to be addressed, warrant a closer look at preparing a good bottle , and also, at preparing our Round Bottle .

How do you make a baby bottle? That is the question

From birth to around 6 months, if you are not breastfeeding or are practicing mixed feeding , your baby will receive some or all of their nutrition through the bottles you prepare. Here is a recipe for preparing good, healthy, and sufficient bottles.

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Take a clean and drained bottle (sterilization is no longer mandatory).
  3. Add the desired amount of water
  4. Pour the number of level doses corresponding to the amount of water in the bottle.
  5. Screw on the teat and clip on the cap.
  6. Roll the bottle between your palms until you obtain a homogeneous mixture.

That's it! Your little one's bottle is ready to drink at room temperature. If your baby prefers it warm, add a step using a bottle warmer or a bain-marie (without the teat).

Choosing the right infant formula

There are dozens of powdered infant formulas available. You can buy them in supermarkets or pharmacies , in tins, often between 800 and 900g . Each tin can be kept for one month after opening , provided it is tightly closed after each use.

  • Infant formula, most often made from cow's milk, or sometimes goat's milk.
  • in dehydrated or liquid form,
  • classic, for premature babies, thickened, anti-reflux, hypoallergenic or low-lactose,
  • Stage 1 milk up to 6 months, stage 2 milk up to 12 months, or growing-up milk beyond, it depends.

You may need to try several brands or types of formula to find the one your baby likes or digests most easily. If you have any difficulties, consult your pediatrician, your local health center (PMI), or the maternity ward; they will be able to advise you. Conversely, if bottles are well tolerated, it is recommended not to change formulas.

Water to reconstitute powdered milk

For your baby's well-being, alternate between brands of low-mineral spring water whose label specifies that they can be used for baby bottles.

You can also use tap water, provided it is neither softened nor filtered, the pipes are not made of lead, and you let it run for a few seconds before filling the bottle. To be absolutely sure, you can also go to your town hall and ask about the quality and composition of your local water.

The bottle should be lukewarm or at room temperature, depending on baby's preference.

To make it easier to digest, you can warm your baby's bottle to around 37°C , the temperature of breast milk. For this, Élhée offers its portable bottle warmer, perfect for taking anywhere ! It provides up to 12 hours of continuous operation , reaches the ideal temperature of 37°C in just 5 minutes , and delivers impressive temperature curves that will make even the most experienced bottle warmers envious!

That said, you can also give the bottle at room temperature . Try it! Often, it's the baby who ends up having the last word by refusing one or the other.

To warm the water for baby bottles, use a bain-marie or a bottle warmer and then add the powdered milk. Remember to check the temperature of the formula by placing a few drops on the inside of your wrist .

Preparing the bottle: the exact dosage

The last essential element for preparing your baby's bottle is the correct amount of formula. Here, there's only one thing to remember: one level scoop equals 30 ml of water . So, to make a 240 ml bottle, simply divide 240 by 30, which gives you 8. To prepare a 240 ml bottle , you will therefore need 8 level scoops of infant formula.

Afraid of making a mistake? Discover the bottle preparation tool . They come in all shapes and sizes, making them all compatible with our ergonomic and flexible round bottles.

Note that, once food diversification has begun, you can add a small spoonful of cereal to the bottle, remembering to change the teat to a fast flow physiological teat , specially adapted for thicker preparations.

Can you mix a bottle of powdered milk in advance?

Once mixed, a bottle should be consumed within an hour. Therefore, it's not really possible to prepare or store several bottles for the day.

To save time when you are not at home, use the small compartmentalized boxes specially designed to allow you to carry between 3 and 4 doses of milk, which you only have to mix for a quick bottle wherever you want.

Mixed feeding and pumping: another way to prepare baby's bottle

Whether by choice for mixed feeding or because the time has come to transition from breast to bottle, many mothers express their milk daily. This allows them to breastfeed their baby and prepare bottles of breast milk , which can be used immediately after expression or stored for future feedings. In this case, breast milk can be kept for 4 hours at room temperature , a maximum of 48 hours in the refrigerator below 4 degrees Celsius, and up to ... 4 months in the freezer .

You know what? Thanks to its physiological teat and its innovative, gently curved design, the Élhée bibRond is the champion of the breast-to-bottle transition , in all categories!

And how do we prepare the Élhée bottle?

Three questions to summarize how to prepare a good baby bottle

How to prepare a baby bottle?

To prepare a bottle, follow these 6 simple steps: wash your hands, take a clean or sterilized bottle, pour in the desired amount of spring or tap water, add the corresponding number of scoops of powdered milk (1 scoop = 30 ml of water), attach the teat and cap, and roll the bottle between your hands to mix. It's ready.

What type of water should I use for my baby's bottle?

Low-mineral water is recommended for preparing baby formula. Compatible bottled spring water will be labeled: "This water is suitable for preparing infant formula." Cold, unfiltered, unsoftened tap water, provided the pipes in the home are not made of lead, can also be used after letting it run for a few moments.

Should you heat the baby's bottle?

A baby's bottle can be given warm, but it's not mandatory. It can also be given at room temperature. Choose according to the baby's preferences or the season: warmed in winter and at room temperature in summer. Note that a bottle warmer or bottle maker can be useful for bringing the milk as close as possible to the temperature of breast milk, which is 37°C.
