  • During colic episodes, the baby's face may turn red, and he may clench his fists in discomfort.
  •  Colic may cause a decrease in appetite in infants, but without associated weight loss (or very briefly and episodically).
  • Babies suffering from colic may have difficulty falling asleep and wake up frequently at night.
  • Your baby's tummy may feel tense and hard to the touch during seizures.

Note that infant colic is not dangerous. not dangerous. They are, however, quite spectacular and anxiety-provoking. Baby can be soothed by rocking in the evening, before falling asleep, with his tummy against your forearm.

Some solutions, such as homeopathy can also help reduce infant colic.

Part 2: The anti-colic bottle

1. What is the role of an anti-colic bottle?

As the name suggests, the role of an anti anti-colic bottle is to combat infant colic. This which affects 20 to 40% of babies, or around 1 in 5.

Its design enables it to to limit air intake and therefore the formation of gas in baby's stomach. Depending on the brand, your bottle may or may not have an anti-colic valve in the bottom of the container.

Some bottles are designed to prevent colic, thanks to their special shape: elbow-shaped or S-shaped, for example.

"A quasi-spherical feeding bottle like the one offered by Elhée also helps reduce air flow. Its generous, breast-like shape maternal breast, makes it reassuring and easy for little hands to hold."

3. Should I stop using an anti-colic bottle once the colic has gone?

Once baby is older and colic is a thing of the past, you may find yourself asking the question: should I or shouldn't I change bottles? 🤔

Or can I keep my anti-colic bottle and continue to offer it to my child?

Yes, if your feeding bottle has the right capacity for the amount of milk your baby needs at each feed. A baby continues to drink milk even after they've started to diversify. Until at least one year of ageUntil he is at least one year old, he will need to drink his bottle of growing-up milk in the morning, at snack time, or even at every meal (recommended until he is 3 years old).

What's more, your baby is used to his bottle. It's not advisable to change his habits overnight.

Dietary diversification does not initially provide all the nutrients your child needs. In fact, it involvesintroducing foods gradually and getting your child used to new flavors.

Your baby's daily nutritional intake can continue to be provided by your anti-colic bottle. On the contrary, as the bottle is designed to limit the introduction of air into the baby's tummy, your baby will be all the more at ease once his meal is over. His digestion will be much improved.

5. At what age should you stop giving your baby an anti-colic bottle?

There are no real rules !

Many agree that after your child reaches 1 year of age, the bottle becomes a non-essential accessory for his development. After all, your baby is all grown up 😉 He feeds himself with his fingers, and can even put the spoon in his mouth like a grown-up.

Even if your help is still needed to finish his dishes...

But does that mean we should do away with baby bottles for good?

This everyday object, such as a comforter or pacifierreassures your child and allows him to experience the same situations of well-being to which he was accustomed as a child. A warm, soft bottle that's pleasant to the touch isn't just a means of feeding. It represents a whole world for your child, helping toawakening of the senses.

Leaving it at your child's disposal, even when they're older, allows them to the choice and not take away an object object to which he is forcibly by force. This, in itself, can be a form of trauma.

Rest assured, baby will be weaned sooner or later and will also drink from a cup or bowl, too impatient to imitate his big brother, sister or parents!

6. What to do with your anti-colic bottle next?

When baby is ready and has given up bottle-feeding for good, you can :

  1. Either keep it for a future baby,
  2. Either donate them to a mother in your family or to your local PMI,
  3. Either recycle by sending it to TerraCycle !

Whatever you come up with, don't throw it away in the rubbish or in the wild... Even though medical-grade silicone is a so-called "inert" material (= not toxic to the environment), it doesn't belong in ditches or the ocean.

🍼 And after the bottle, it's time for the learning cup!
