How to prepare a feeding bottle, or the art of pleasing your baby's tummy

Infant milk, or powdered milk, and water. That's it, or rather, the bottle is ready. However, "How do I prepare a bottle?" is one of the most frequently asked questions by future parents. Fear of using the wrong dose, of using unsuitable water, of giving your baby a tummy ache, of making him hungry again... Fears which, if they are to be allayed, deserve a closer look at how to prepare a good bottle, and also how to prepare our own bibRound.

How do you make a feeding bottle? That is the question

From birth to about 6 months, if you don't breastfeed your baby or if you practicemixed feedingIf you don't breastfeed, or if you practice mixed feeding, your baby receives part or all of his food intake from the bottles you prepare for him. Here's the recipe for preparing good, healthy bottles that are sufficient in quantity.

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Take a clean, drained bottle (sterilization is no longer compulsory).
  3. Add the desired amount of water
  4. Pour the number of level doses corresponding to the amount of water in the bottle.
  5. Screw on the teat and clip on the cap.
  6. Roll the bottle between your palms until smooth.

That's all there is to it! Your little one's bottle is ready to drink at room temperature. If your baby prefers it lukewarm, add a bottle-warmer or bain-marie step (without the teat).

Choosing the right infant formula

From powdered infant milksThere are dozens of them. You can buy them in supermarkets or pharmacies, in tins of between 800 and 900g. Each can be kept for one month after opening, provided it is tightly resealed after each use.

  • Infant milk made from cow's milk or goat's milk,
  • in dehydrated or liquid form,
  • classic, for premature babies, thickened, anti-reflux, hypoallergenic and low-lactose,
  • 1st age milk up to 6 months, 2nd age milk up to 12 months, or growing-up milk beyond that, as the case may be.

You may need to test several brands or types of formula to find the one your baby likes or digests best. If you have any difficulties, turn to your paediatrician, PMI or maternity hospital for advice. Conversely, if baby's bottles are well tolerated, it's advisable not to change formula.

Water to reconstitute milk powder

For your baby's well-being, alternate brands oflow mineralized spring water whose label specifies that they can be used for bottle feeding.

You can also use tap water, provided it has not been softened or filtered, the pipes are not made of lead, and you let it run for a few seconds before filling the bottle. For complete reassurance, you can also go to your local town hall and ask about the quality and composition of your local water.

Warm or room-temperature bottle, depending on baby's taste

To make it more digestible, you can heat your child's bottle to around 37°C, the temperature of breast milk. For this purpose, Élhée offers you its nomad bottle warmer to take everywhere! Up to 12 hours of autonomy, just 5 minutes to reach the ideal temperature of 37°C and curves to make even the biggest kids swoon!

That said, you can also give the bottle at room temperature. Do the test! Very often, it's baby who ends up having the last word by refusing one or the other.

To warm up the water in the bottles, use a bain-marie or bottle warmer, then pour in the milk powder. Don't forget to check the temperature of the formula by placing a few drops on the inside of your wrist.

Bottle preparation: the right dosage

The last essential element in preparing your baby's bottle is the right amount of milk powder. Here, there's just one thing to remember: one levelled spoon = 30 ml of water. So, to find out how to make a 240 ml bottle, simply divide 240 by 30, which gives you 8. To prepare a 240 ml bottleyou'll need 8 level doses of infant milk.

Afraid of making a mistake? Discover the bottle preparer. They come in all shapes, making them all compatible with our ergonomic, flexible bibRonds.

As soon as you start to diversify your diet, you can add a teaspoon of cereal to the bottle, not forgetting to change the nipple for a fast-flow physiological teatspecially adapted to thicker formulas.

Can I mix a bottle of milk powder in advance?

Once mixed, a bottle must be consumed within the hour. So it's not really possible to anticipate or store several bottles for the day.

To save time when you're away from home, use the small, compartmentalized boxes specially designed to allow you to carry between 3 and 4 doses of milk, which you just need to mix for a quick bottle wherever you like.

Mixed feeding and breast pumps: another way to prepare baby's bottle

By choice formixed breastfeeding or because the time has come to make the transition from breast to bottle, every day mothers pump their milk. This enables them to breastfeed their babies and prepare bottles of breast milk, which can be used directly after expressing, or stored for future meals. In the latter case, breast milk can be stored for up to 4 hours at room temperature, for up to 48 hours in the fridge below 4 degrees, andfor up to 4months in the freezer.

Do you know something? Thanks to its physiological teat and its innovative, soft, curved design, bibRond Élhée is the champion of breast-to-bottle transitions in every category!

Three questions to sum up the preparation of a good bottle

How to prepare a feeding bottle

To prepare a bottle, follow 6 simple steps: wash your hands, take a clean or sterilized bottle, pour in the desired amount of spring or tap water, add the corresponding number of doses of milk powder (1 dose = 30 ml of water), attach the teat and cap and roll the bottle between your hands to mix. You're all set.

Which water for baby's bottle?

Water with a low mineral content is recommended for preparing baby bottles. Bottles of compatible spring water are labelled: "This water is suitable for preparing baby food". Cold, unfiltered, unsoftened tap water can also be used, provided the pipes in the home are not made of lead, after letting it run for a few moments.

Should baby's bottle be heated?

Baby's bottle can be given lukewarm, but this is not compulsory. It can also be drunk at room temperature. Choose according to your baby's tastes and the season: warmed in winter and at room temperature in summer. It's worth noting the usefulness of bottle warmers and bottle preparers to bring the milk as close as possible to the temperature of breast milk, i.e. 37°C.
